💠Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted, has laid down obligations which we are not permitted to ignore, and has set limits which we are not permitted to transgress, and has set out prohibitions which we are not allowed to violate.💠
🔰Woman wearing perfume when going out is one of the that are taken too lightly!
🔰This practice is widespread nowadays, despite the stern warning of the Prophet (ﷺ), who said:
🌻“Any woman who applies perfume and then goes out among the people so that they could smell her fragrance is a zaaniyah(adulteress).” [Reported by Imaam Ahmad, 4/418; see also Saheeh al-Jaami’, 105].
🔰From the above hadiths, describing such a woman as an 'zaaniyah' means that she is like an adulteress.
🔰Some women are very careless and take the matter too lightly, especially in front of drivers, shopkeepers, school porters, etc., even though the Sharee’ah states very strictly that the woman who wears perfume must wash herself like a person must wash when in a state of janaabah (i.e., perform Bath), if she wants to go out.
🌻The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Any woman who wears perfume then goes out to the Masjid, so that the fragrance can be discerned, her prayers will not be accepted until she performs ghusl to be performed when in a state of janaabah.” [Reported by Imaam Ahmad, 2/444; see also Saheeh al-Jaami’, 2703].
🔰Some people may misunderstand the above hadeeth to be specific to women who go the masjid for prayer, however this is clearly not the case. The mention of the masjid is not restrictive in this hadeeth, and the ruling applies to women going out anywhere.
🔰With regard to men, they are not forbidden to do that; rather it is mustahabb for men to use perfume on all occasions, and it is particularly mustahabb on Fridays and Eid, when people gather in mosques and prayer-places and so on.
🔰If the perfume is light, so its smell does not spread beyond its place except for a limited range, and if it is not used with the intention of seduction but rather for removing the smell of sweat, for example, the woman in such case is not like an adulteress because she is not intending seduction.
🌻Abu Hurayrah (ra) reported, The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Perfume for men is that which has a strong fragrance and Little colour, and perfume for women is that which has a strong colour and little fragrance.” [Abu Dawood (2174), and by al-Tirmidhi (2787)]
🔰Sa’eed ibn Abi ‘Uroobah, the narrator of the hadeeth, said: I think that with regard to the words “perfume for women” this refers to when she wants to go out, but if she is with her husband, she may apply whatever perfume she wants. [Sunan Abi Dawood (4/84); Sharh al-Sunnah by al-Baghawi, 12/81.]
🔰To sum up:
✅If a woman wants to go out of her house, she must avoid wearing perfume. It is disliked at least, for even if the smell of the perfume is light, there is still a risk that men will smell it due to the congestion in streets, markets, and means of transport. Thus, it is more appropriate for the righteous woman to avoid anything that might trigger temptation.
✅Furthermore, the smell of sweat can be removed by bathing or washing the places in which sweat is usually found [and by wearing light deodorant]. It does not need wearing any perfume, because wearing light perfumes might lead to wearing strong ones.
✅Such prohibition is applicable only in the presence of non-mahram, whether inside or outside a woman’s house. However, in the presence of mahram men, her husband, or other women, there is no restriction on wearing perfume, due to the absence of temptation in the presence of mahram, or to please the husband or to avoid being criticized by other women.
✅Whatever comes under the same heading as using fragrance, such as using soap/shampoo/deodarants etc that has a strong and lasting smell that remains after using it, comes under the same ruling.✔ It is not permissible for her to use any of those things if she is going out of her house or mixing with men. Allah Almighty knows best.
🔱Dear Sisters, Fear Allaah and be among those who are truthful in their worship to Allaah. Abide by the commands of Allaah in order to attain nearness to Him and obtain His good rewards; shun His prohibitions in order to avoid being far from His mercy and being liable to His punishment.🔱
